It's Official: HULK has found his furever family!

10/12/2015

Without even leaving what "he" has called home for the last five months! That's right, his foster mommy & daddy have adopted him.
Yes, another "foster failure", but, they are "seasoned" fosters and have seen many a dogs go on to find their forever families, but sometimes, there's that "one" that really fits in right where they are. And after five months, Hulk really put on the brakes everytime he had to go to another adoption event. He watched as other dogs came and went, and still, the right match for him hadn't showed up yet.
We are happy for Hulk, who is now going to be called Jax.
His foster parents are good friends and we'll see him in person and on Facebook with all his "outfits" on. His mom Loves to dress up her dogs,
and he's such a good sport.
Here is just a sample of what he's in for.....

Trouble is Free!

Trouble is FREE!!

And we had such a great time on this project. It will go down as one of our all-time favorites for a few reasons.

1. Trouble's owner ( whom said no to a fence at first), was so glad he agreed, and thanked us over and over AND he even paid for half of the costs. A first for us.
2. We had such a great group of volunteers on both days. Time flew by.
3. It was the 7 year wedding anniversary for one of our couples today, and all she wanted was for her husband to come with her to help with the build this weekend!
He did of course and gets extra brownie points! =)
4. The best of all: Trouble is so happy now, she has a huge fenced in yard to be free in.

THANK YOU to everyone who helped make it possible.

Hi Everyone,

It's Festival time in the Bluegrass and SOAR has several upcoming events and we need YOU to help us out!

Since we are an ALL-VOLUNTEER based organization, we rely on folks to come join us as we set up at events in the counties where we assist chained and penned dogs.

Events are fun, easy and educational. It's also one way we bring in funds to support our mission.

Our first big festival is the Daniel Boone Pioneer Festival
SEPT.5th & 6th. Next weekend. In Winchester, KY.

SOAR has participated in this festival for several years and since we do so much of our work there, we enjoy going back year after year to speak to people about the work that we do.

If you would like to volunteer either day, morning or afternoon shift. Send us a message and we'll set you up. Or call the SOAR line @

859-621-0079

Come visit us and take a chance on our Awesome Raffle Basket
or buy some cool SOAR Merchandise!

See you there!

Diva finds her forever family!

Diva has found her forever family!

This beauty had so many apps. and inquiries we could hardly keep up! They came in from near and far, and the lucky family drove all the way from Maryland with their three children and their dog Zeus today, to meet Diva and see if it was a match. And it was:)

Right off the bat they wanted to run and play. They make such a great pair with Zeus being all white and Diva with her shiny black coat, and both are the same age, with Diva being one month older. While it's always nice to have them be adopted locally, sometimes the right match is 10 hours away!!
Yes, we still did the home visit and all the checks first. Technology is amazing with face time and google earth. And we'll get lots of updates with her in her new home. She'll even get to go to work with her daddy a few times a week, along with Zeus.

Always a happy day when one of our rescues get to start their new life with a terrific family.

Bear is Now in SOAR's Care!

6/8/2015

We wanted to give it one more try to rescue Bear, so my sidekick, Bobbie, and I headed out to Bear's Sunday afternoon. His owner was home and after we talked about how Bear could have a much better life than living in solitude day after day, she signed him over! However, she did not want to be there when we took him.
So, we took a short drive and she went to work. We then went back and tried to work our magic getting him to come to us.
Mind you, this dog has never been off that hill except for a few times in 4 four years. He has been isolated and not used to strangers.

After we saw that we were going to need help, we called our Animal Control to assist us as they were aware of the situation.
The "on call" officer said she would come after she was finished with the call she was on, however after waiting some time she called me back and said "she called her supervisor and she was not allowed to come because it was a non-emergency." smh,
But, that they would go out there in the morning and get him, take him to the shelter and I could come pick him up at no charge.
Since I'm not stupid, that plan was not going to happen and I said we would handle it ourselves. Having dealt with this shelter and their antics for 15 years now, I know better. It's pretty bad when our own county (Scott), will not support our efforts. Instead, they go out of their way to make it difficult for us to get help for the dogs that we have reported or asked for assistance with.
We rarely make that call for them to check on anything because they tell the people that SOAR is the one who reported it, as with Bear today. This not only breaks our "anonymity", it could put us in danger. The officer was already out on a call, so what harm would it have done to come help us?
Had we waited until later, Bear's owner could have changed her mind and we would have lost the window of opportunity. So, we lit up our phones and called and texted our rescue friends in the community and then there were Five!! And we were able to get Bear out of his yard and into the van. Once he was in there, it was a breeze. He knew his life would never be the same.

Bear will be going to Pyrenees Rescue, but in the meantime, he is hanging out in the air conditioning and will be getting a much needed grooming.

Thanks so much to our friends, Denise and her husband, and Remy for helping us out..teamwork gets it done!

The Incredible Hulk

5/31/2015

For all of our email readers, I would like for you to meet “ Hulk.” He really is “Incredible!”

This cute little guy was rescued on April 18th. From where you ask? Why, Winchester, Ky. Where we spend the majority of our time. We were wrapping up an outing on that day, when I stopped two doors down from where Hulk lived to check on some other dogs we assisted, his owner came up to the van with him in her arms and said “ you can take him, I’ve been killing snakes in his pen and I don’t want him to get bit.” Yes, this little fella lived all alone outside in a small pen in the front yard. We had visited him several times, giving straw in the winter, bones and treats, but they never would surrender him, stating the “children loved him.”  Something we hear way too often with chained/penned dogs.

On this day, however, we happily loaded him up, and off he went straight to a foster home, where he has settled right in.

He loves having toys to play with, laps to lay in and most of all, other dogs to play with. He’s best buddies with his other “foster siblings” Leslie & Louie who are being fostered in the same home, but for another rescue.

Hulk will be two years old in December. He is a Dachshund/ Chihuahua Mix,  he’s Housetrained, Neutered, Vaccinated & Microchipped and weighs 9 pounds.

The day of rescue..                                     His first Pawty…                             Hulk with Best Friends,                                                                                                                                                                        Leslie & Louie

SOAR & The Mailing List

5/25/2015

Hello Out There,

My, it has been a long time since emails were sent. For those of you who don’t use Facebook, we are returning to email updates, so you too, can still keep up with us.

I can assure you, SOAR has been very busy assisting, rescuing, advocating, and building fences for chained dogs throughout our email absence.

We have rescued FIVE dogs so far this year. Three lived on chains, One lived in a small pen, and one was living on the streets of Winchester, KY. Speaking of Winchester, that city remains our most “go to” city. We continue to get many calls to assist chained dogs there, in fact, Four of the five dogs we have rescued so far this year have come from Winchester!

During the long winter, we assisted many dogs that were left out in the cold with no food, straw and frozen water.

We made a huge dent in our straw supply and gave out countless bales to those that had nothing to help keep them warm.

And just last weekend, we built our first fence of the season for a chained dog named Bella, who also lives in Winchester.

Bella now has a big fenced in yard in which to run and play freely.

SOAR is now gearing up for events that we do around Kentucky. June 13th, kicks off our first one, which will be the Beer Cheese Festival in Winchester. A one day event that’s fun with lots of good food! More on that to come J

If you used to receive our emails, and miss them, I know I missed you guys, let me know that you are receiving them.

The problem we had was, Mail Chimp, while I’m no fan of this way of sending emails, our list grew too big for me to send out the “old fashion” way. I’m just an “old fashion” way kinda gal. Then because of this new way, most of our recipients weren’t getting the emails, instead going into “junk.” So, please change your settings to start receiving SOAR emails again.

Forward them to others who may want to keep up with us too.

SOAR remains an All-Volunteer, Non-Profit Organization, that relies solely on Volunteers to do the vital on behalf of Chained/Penned Dogs. Come join our Awesome Team of Volunteers!

I look forward to resuming our friendship again each Monday with a new update.

Sincerely,

Tracy
